News-Leader December 16 2011

One hundred and forty golfers turned out Dec. 9 at Omni Resort Amelia island Plantation to participate in the Navy Seal Foundation Golf Tournament to honor the memory and spirit of fallen Navy Seals.

The golf tournament was held at the Omni Resort Amelia Island’s Oak Marsh golf course while the dinner and silent auction were held at the Omni Convention Center.

The Navy Seal Foundation’s mission is to provide immediate and ongoing assistance to the Naval Special Warfare community, which includes the Navy Seals, Special Warfare Combatant Crewman, Navy Special Warfare Commands’ support personnel and their immediate family members. As the duration of the Seals’ operational deployment continues to grow (some have been deployed six o more times) and the stress on families and operators increases, their special community requires more support than ever.

The idea to support the Navy Seals was conceived by a group of men from the Amelia Island Club, headed by Larry Byrd, al Watson and Joe Murphy with the help of Lee Kaufman, Curt Platte, Louis Tuzy, Ken Graham, Chuck Penella and Mike Clover.

The event to raise money for the Navy Seal Foundation included the golf tournament, 60 tee box sponsorships and a banquet with a silent auction attended by 225 people.

The Two-day event was widely supported and raised a total of $150,000 for the Navy Seal Foundation. Teams were made up of players from as far away as Kentucky, all over Amelia Island, Mayport Naval Base, the Coast Guard and Navy Seals.
