A Second Chance. A New Mission.

Building Battle Buddies believes that some of the strongest partnerships begin with a second chance. Through relationships with animal shelters and rescue organizations, carefully selected dogs are given an opportunity to leave the shelter behind and begin a new life of purpose alongside a Veteran or First Responder.

Each potential Battle Buddy is evaluated with the goal of identifying dogs with the temperament, personality, and potential necessary to become a dependable service companion. The right match is about more than finding a dog—it is about creating the foundation for a lasting partnership.

From Shelter Dog to Battle Buddy

Once matched, the Veteran or First Responder and their dog begin their journey together through Building Battle Buddies’ immersive 21-day training program. Rather than simply receiving a trained dog, participants take an active role in the training process, learning alongside their Battle Buddy and developing trust, communication, and teamwork from the beginning.

This approach gives shelter dogs something they may never have had before: a home, a purpose, and someone who depends on them. At the same time, Veterans and First Responders gain a companion who can provide support, confidence, and greater independence in their daily lives.

Saving Two Lives at Once

At the heart of Building Battle Buddies is a simple but powerful idea: one partnership can change two lives.

A deserving shelter dog receives a second chance and a meaningful new purpose. A Veteran or First Responder gains a trusted companion and partner who will stand beside them long after the training program is complete.

Together, they become more than handler and service dog.

They become Battle Buddies.
